Reid Technique of Investigative Interviewing and Advanced Interrogation

The Reid Technique is one of the most widely used interview and interrogation methods in law enforcement and corporate investigations. Developed by John E. Reid in the 1950s and refined over decades by John E. Reid and Associates, it provides investigators with a structured framework for gathering information and, when warranted, obtaining confessions from suspects believed to be involved in wrongdoing.

This structured interview and interrogation process involves three primary stages: Fact Analysis, the Investigative Interview and, when appropriate, the Interrogation.

At the conclusion of this non-accusatory interview the investigator will evaluate the investigative and behavioral information developed during the interview, as well as the information, facts and evidence developed during the investigation up to this point, and then make one of several possible decisions: the investigator may eliminate the subject from further investigation; the investigator may determine that the investigation of the subject should continue; or the investigator may decide to initiate the interrogation of the subject.

Provides a clear, repeatable process for approaching interviews and interrogations.
Trains investigators to notice verbal and non-verbal cues that may warrant closer scrutiny during questioning.
Corporate security, loss prevention, HR investigations, and fraud examiners use the technique for internal misconduct cases.
The active listening, question-framing, and observation skills apply to negotiations, HR conversations, and other high-stakes conversations.

Our Process

Structured Interview & Interrogation Approach

The Reid Technique course follows a structured, practical approach that guides participants through the key stages of Fact Analysis, the Investigative Interview, and, when appropriate, the Interrogation.

Participants learn how to gather and evaluate investigative information, conduct non-accusatory interviews, observe verbal and non-verbal behaviour, and assess responses alongside available facts and evidence. The training then explores how investigators determine the appropriate next step, whether eliminating a subject from further investigation, continuing the investigation, or proceeding to an interrogation.

Through practical instruction, questioning techniques, behavioural observation and real-world investigative scenarios, participants develop a systematic approach to conducting more effective, professional and informed interviews and interrogations.
